Hey! I'm Monique
If you were nodding along, then girl, you are definitely not alone. I’ve been that same girl with debilitating acne, a novel length list of health issues, and pretty low self-esteem – I’m talking “look in the mirror and cry” type self-esteem.
But sometimes life throws you challenges so you can rise up and inspire others to do the same.
And that’s why it is my mission to help empower women to heal their acne naturally, love who they see in the mirror and show up as the incredible woman you were here to be.
I’m a self-proclaimed foodie, health nerd, motivational quote addict and eternal optimist. I walk the lines between deep diving into personal development books, watching Disney movies or dropping it low on the dance floor to a 90’s RnB banger.
As a qualified Brisbane-based physiotherapist with prior university studies in science and exercise physiology, I have a unique set of skills that allow me to provide a comprehensive, evidence-based perspective in the health and wellness space. My background combined with overcoming my own acne and health imbalances is why I’m so passionate about sharing my story.
I’m here to challenge conventional beauty standards (#acnepositivity) and advocate to change the way society sees acne. But most importantly, I’m here as your cheerleader – to show you that it is possible to transform your health and skin naturally and embrace life regardless of your imperfections.
Like many teenagers I suffered with acne which persisted well into my mid 20s. This condition began to control my life: consuming my thoughts, my self-worth and prevented me from doing certain things out of fear of what my skin looked like. It dictated the foods I ate, affected my relationships, and made me hate the person I saw in the mirror.
After trying multiple fad diets, overpriced face creams, facials, medications, supplements and the contraceptive pill, nothing would fix my acne. I was told the only way to “cure” my acne was going on isotretinoin (Accutane) and this was an option I was not willing to take. I knew there had to be another way.
In the midst of my struggle with acne, I contracted glandular fever on my 18th birthday (just what every girl wants right?) which sparked a downwards spiral of health issues. My health hit rock bottom in 2014 and then crashed worse in 2017. I had developed a multitude of internal health problems: increasing food intolerances (where my skin would break out if I ate anything); leaky gut, amenorrhea, unexplained severe weight loss, chronic fatigue, nutrient deficiencies, microbiome dysbiosis, parasite infections, candida and severe hormone imbalances. This was just to name a few.
I was a girl in her early 20s who had the hormone levels of a woman in menopause, a dangerously low body weight, and energy levels that rendered me bed bound. I knew if I didn’t change something fast, I was headed down a very scary road.
Ultimately, I was the only one responsible for my health, so I became obsessed with learning how to naturally heal my skin and body holistically. I wanted to uncover the root cause and not just seek a band-aid solution. So I deep dove into the research of both eastern and western medicine, consulted with a team of experts and practically used my body as a scientific experiment to heal myself.
The outcome: I literally turned my life around.
Now I feel vibrantly healthy and my skin is the clearest it’s ever been. And yet, I’m still a work in progress. Because at the end of the day, true health is a journey not a destination
Let’s be real, I’m not a wellness guru and my skin isn’t perfect. I still have scars and there are still days when my skin ebs and flows. But I’ve developed a tool kit to understand what’s happening in my body, how to manage my skin and love myself through the process.
And I want to help you do the same!
We all have imperfections, stories and scars. But that’s what’s makes us f***ing human. It’s what makes us into who we are.
And that leads me to you
I’m here for YOU!
Because I value your time and trust, I promise to be transparent and unapologetically real. This space is where I share all the mistakes, lessons and life hacks I have learned (and continue to learn) throughout years of being my own heath guinea pig. Let this be your one-stop-shop for scientifically backed evidence, expert opinions and years of research all put together in a way that’s accessible and easy to understand. Your days of prowling all over the internet for breadcrumbs of information are over.
But most importantly, this is a space for our growing community of women to connect and feel inspired to live their best lives regardless of what their skin looks like.
I’m here to empower you with the knowledge to make your own informed decisions so you can reclaim your health, transform your skin and LOVE the amazing woman you see in the mirror.
